Frequently Asked Questions

Where is my data stored?

All of your data which includes climbing sessions, training logs, goals, projects, notes, and grades are stored locally on your device in a private database. Nothing is uploaded, transmitted, or synced to any server. Your data never leaves your device.

See the Privacy Policy for full details.

Do I need an account or sign-in?

No. There are no accounts, sign-ins, or email addresses required. Just download the app and start logging.

Does the app work offline?

Yes! Completely! You can log sessions at the crag, in the gym with no internet connection.

How do I restore my purchase?

If you've already unlocked the app and then reinstalled it, switched devices, or restored your phone, you can recover your unlock at no additional cost:

  1. Go to the Settings page.
  2. Scroll to the Purchase section.
  3. Tap Restore Purchases.
  4. Sign in with the same Apple ID you used for the original purchase if prompted.

Your unlock is tied to your Apple ID and will be restored automatically. If it doesn't restore, make sure you're signed in to the correct Apple ID and try again, or email me at the address above.

I reinstalled the app / switched phones — where did my data go?

Because your data is stored only on your device for privacy, it is not automatically backed up to the cloud. If you delete the app or move to a new device, your logged data does not transfer automatically.

We recommend backing up your data to iCloud at a regular frequency, so you can restore it if needed.

Which grading systems are supported?

The Climber's Journal supports YDS, V-scale, French, and Font grading systems across sport, boulder, top-rope, tradidional, and deep-water solo disciplines.

How do I download climbs from OpenBeta?

You can import route libraries from OpenBeta into your Route Library so you can search routes, log climbs against them, and track projects.

Getting there

  1. Open the Projects tab and tap the library icon in the right corner of the header.
  2. Tap Add (top right), then choose DownloadImport routes from OpenBeta.

Downloading an area

  1. Browse countries on the Areas screen and tap a country to expand it.
  2. Select one or more areas you want to import. Each area shows how many climbs it contains.
  3. Tap Download (top right).
  4. Review the download summary, then wait while routes are saved to your device. Keep the app open until every selected area shows Done — large areas can take a while.
  5. Tap Done to return to your Route Library.

Downloaded routes are stored locally on your device and are available offline after the import finishes. Browsing areas and downloading new libraries requires an internet connection.

Already downloaded areas

Areas you have already imported are tagged Downloaded and cannot be selected again unless an Update Available tag appears — that means newer route data is available from OpenBeta. Select those areas and download again to refresh your library.

If a download was interrupted, reopening the Areas screen will take you back to the in-progress download so it can resume.

Removing imported areas

To remove routes you downloaded from OpenBeta:

  • Swipe left on a country to delete all downloaded areas in that country, or
  • Expand a country and swipe left on an individual area.

If you have climb logs linked to routes in that area, the app will warn you before deleting.

Viewing a route on OpenBeta

Open any imported route in your Route Library. If it came from OpenBeta, tap View on Openbeta at the bottom of the route details screen.

Route data is provided by the OpenBeta community.

How do I report a bug or request a feature?

Email warren.wan@goshopdevelopment.ca with a short description. Screenshots and your device model / iOS version help a lot. Feature requests are always welcome.
